How does your weight affect your vulva?
This might seem like an odd subject, but being overweight has a profound affect on vulval skin for a number of reasons:
Overweight patients tend to be very hot and sweaty. This means their skin down there is always moist. Their legs rub on their vulva and cause chafing. All of this is bad for your skin. If you have a skin disease it’s more than bad
…it makes it just about impossible to get better.
Varicose veins are more likely if you are overweight and they can affect the vulva, producing a dragging sensation and aching at the end of the day.
Being overweight puts extra pressure on your bladder. This means you mat leak urine and that means you are always damp. In turn that means you are probably wearing a lot of pads and incontinence shields. That’s bad for your skin.
Patients who are overweight are at risk for Type 2 diabetes. In turn, this puts you at risk for thrush infections.
When you are overweight, it’s hard to find comfortable jeans and pants. That means you are probably wearing nylon leggings instead. They make you even hotter and sweatier.
If you are really overweight, it is in fact difficult to ever see your vulva, even using a handheld mirror. That can make it very hard to accurately apply creams if you have a vulval skin problem.
So, if you have a vulval problem and you are overweight, it’s not good news. Nothing could be better for your vulval skin than shedding those kilos, so if you can get motivated to do so it will really help.
